Labor Law and Research Intern at Verite

The intern is likely to work on one or more of the following projects. However, other projects may also be available.

Project One: To review updates in a wide variety of international labor standards publications for the Emerging Markets Research Project; a multi-year initiative to research relevant information on labor standards compliance in 25 emerging market countries around the world.

Types of publications to be reviewed:
• U.S. State Department Human Rights Reports ; U.S. Department of Labor “Foreign Labor Trends” Country Reports ; “Worst Forms of Child Labor”; “Advancing the Campaign Against Child Labor: The Resource Allocations of National Governments and International Financial Institutions”; 2010 Human Rights Watch World Reports; 2010 Amnesty International reports, International Trade Union Confederation Annual Report, etc.

Research Tasks
• Update existing country reports (from 2010) based on any new information in the most recent versions of the above publications. Tasks include review of publications, insertion of new information, updating bibliographies, formatting; provide brief analysis of countries’ performance based on the updated information–are labor rights conditions getting better or worse?

Project Two: To assist in the development and research of Verité’s International Labor Law
Digest Series. Verité’s Labor Law Digests are detailed references for key aspects of country labor law related to standard corporate codes of conduct including:
 
• Child Labor
• Special Provisions for Women Workers
• Freedom of Association & Collective Bargaining
• Employment Practices and Personnel Policies
• Wages
• Benefits
• Hours of Work
• Contract Labor
• Health and Safety

The primary target audience for these Digests is compliance officers of retail and sourcing companies in the garment industry, although the Digests can be a reference for anyone interested in information on worker protections in global supply chain production.
