Justice, Human Rights & Natural Resources Program Officer at the Due Process of Law Foundation


The Due Process of Law Foundation (DPLF) seeks a Program Officer for our Justice, Human Rights, and Natural Resources projects. Under the direct supervision of the Senior Program Officer, and in close coordination with the Executive Director, the Program Officer will provide technical assistance to civil society groups in Latin America, produce and disseminate information produced within the projects and carry out educational and advocacy activities both in the region as well as the United States. The position is based in Washington D.C.
DPLF’s Justice, Human Rights and Natural Resources projects seek to promote a higher use of the legal and institutional mechanisms available at the national and international levels to address conflicts related to extractive industries in Latin America and to promote State and corporate legal accountability.
About DPLF: DPLF is a regional non-profit organization devoted to promoting the rule of law and human rights in Latin America. DPLF was founded by Professor Thomas Buergenthal, retired judge at the International Court of Justice (The Hague), and his former colleagues from the UN Truth Commission for El Salvador. Today, DPLF promotes the reform and modernization of Latin America’s national justice systems to ensure that the rule of law and respect for human rights are the hallmarks of justice systems throughout the Americas. This work is carried out through academic research, events, training, and technical assistance of civil society groups in Latin America.
Responsibilities:
The Program Officer responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to:
• Coordinate and give technical assistance to our partner organizations in Latin America on legal and institutional strategies to address the impact of natural resources extraction 
• Work closely with our partner organizations on issues related to institutional strengthening including, if necessary, fundraising.
• Plan, organize, and carry out seminars, conferences, workshops and meetings in Latin America.
• Vet, hire, and oversee project consultants based in Latin America.
• Carry out and coordinate research and political analysis on the issues addressed in the program.
• In coordination with other DPLF staff, develop and maintain the program’s Web site.
• Manage media relations, including writing opinion and informational pieces for the media in the U.S. and in Latin America.
• Identify and carrying out other educational and advocacy activities at a regional and/or country level as well as in the United States.
• Edit publications produced within the program.
• Assist the Executive Director and Senior Program Officer in researching, developing, vetting ideas and writing new concept papers and project proposals for the program area.
• Frequent travel to Latin America is required.
Qualifications:
• Law degree;
• At least three years experience working on human rights issues in Latin America from an international law perspective. Experience with Indigenous People’s rights and Inter-American law is desirable.
• Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English;
• Excellent research and writing skills;
• Strong ability to organize work, time and set priorities;
• High degree of personal initiative to propose and carry out activities; 
• Ability to work independently with little supervision;
• Sensitivity and criteria in facing a multicultural work environment;
• Excellent interpersonal skills with people from different backgrounds and positions;
• Special sensitivity for working with small civil society groups based in remote areas;
• Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure;
• Availability for frequent and remote travel.
